Latin American idea that tells us how to live well and in balance with everything around us. As in, “Let’s live our best life while being kind to each other and the planet.” Know “Buen Vivir” Means: On World Social Work Day, we want to make a difference. What? March 19 is World Social Work Day. Let’s thank all the great people who work hard to make the world a better place today. In real life, social workers are like superheroes because they help people who need it the most. Know “Buen Vivir” Means: The things social workers do As far as solving problems go, social workers are on steroids. They do hard things like helping families, standing up for fairness, and making sure everyone has a chance to live a good life. It’s always busy for social workers. They help kids with schoolwork and speak up for people who can’t do it themselves. Know “Buen Vivir” Means: What Kinds of Social Work There Are There are different ways that social workers do their jobs. As an example, some work one-on-one with people or families, like a personal guide. Some people help many people at once in places like schools or neighborhoods where they work with bigger groups. Others work on big issues to improve the world for everyone, such as changing laws or making important choices. A Quick Lesson in History Without warning, World Social Work Day happened. As early as 1983, some smart people thought it would be fun for social workers to hang out at the UN. Today is World Social Work Day, which started in 2007. The theme for 2024 is “Buen Vivir” for Change. Weltjahr für Sozialarbeit is all about “Buen Vivir” this year, which means “Shared Future for Transformative Change.” Is that a fancy word? All it means is “Let’s work together to make huge, awesome changes that benefit everyone.” Modest Change vs. Big Change Changes happen all the time, like when you change your haircut. However, radical change is quite different and involves turning things around completely. We need to do more than fix one thing. We need to completely change everything for the better in the long run. Allow Us to Make a Difference How are we going to make the world a better spot? As you might guess, by working together! Let us learn from “Buen Vivir” and try to live in peace with each other and the Earth. The social workers are in charge, but we all need to help them.
